The satellite has been co-financed by Open Cosmos, which has also been in charge of its development and operation.
Posidonia will strengthen the archipelago's Earth observation capabilities to improve environmental and territorial management.

Palma, 27 July 2026. The Government of the Balearic Islands and Open Cosmos have held the institutional event to commemorate the launch into orbit of Posidonia, the first satellite promoted by the Balearic Islands, a milestone that marks a new step in the archipelago's commitment to technological innovation and the use of spatial data for land management.

The event, held this morning in the ParcBit Auditorium, was attended by the President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, and the founder and CEO of Open Cosmos, Rafel Jordà, who highlighted the importance of this project for the development of new technological capabilities at the service of the Balearic Islands.

The satellite has been co-financed by Open Cosmos, which has also been in charge of its development and operation, together with funding from the European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Facility-Next Generation EU.

During the event, attendees were able to relive the moment of the launch of Posidonia through images of the mission, as well as its assembly and manufacture, and witnessed the delivery to the Government of the Balearic Islands of the first image captured by the satellite, a symbolic moment that marks the beginning of its operational phase.

Marga Prohens, President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, stressed that "today we celebrate a different way of understanding the future of the Balearic Islands, a future that is no longer an idea, it is a reality. Posidonia is the best proof of this. It is the result of talent, entrepreneurial capacity, public-private collaboration and trust in an economic model that wants to look to the future". The President also had a few words of praise for Open Cosmos: "It is so symbolic that behind this project there is a company like Open Cosmos. A company founded and directed by a person from this land, Rafel Jordà, with an international presence, who has chosen to continue maintaining roots in the Balearic Islands. A company that shows that the talent of this land can compete with the best in the world. And that from ParcBit it is able to participate in some of the most advanced technological projects on the planet", he added.

Rafel Jordà, founder and CEO of Open Cosmos, remarked that "the launch of Posidonia into orbit marks a before and after for the Balearic Islands. It shows that space technology is already within the reach of territories that want to better understand their environment and manage it more efficiently. Today we are not only celebrating the arrival of the first Balearic satellite in space, but also the beginning of a new capacity to generate knowledge and make decisions based on our own data". "We are proud to have accompanied the Balearic Islands in this pioneering project. Posidonia is the demonstration that space can become a useful tool to respond to the daily challenges of territories and generate tangible benefits for citizens," added Jordà.

Posidonia is the first satellite in the Balearic Islands and has been developed with the aim of strengthening the archipelago's Earth observation capabilities. The data obtained will contribute to improving the environmental and territorial management of the Balearic Islands, providing valuable information for decision-making and monitoring of the territory.

The project has had the participation of a wide ecosystem of local actors, including Wireless DNA, the University of the Balearic Islands and Garden Hotels, as well as the support of the Hotel Business Federation of Mallorca (FEHM), strengthening collaboration between the public, private and academic sectors of the archipelago.

The commissioning of the satellite represents a new stage in the Balearic Islands' access to advanced space technologies and consolidates the region's role in promoting innovative projects with a direct impact on sustainability, knowledge and land management.
